Custom Projects

Sometimes off-the-shelf just doesn't get the job done.

We get to flex our skills with custom work, and we do a lot of it. For example, clients often need a feature or tool that doesn't exist, or maybe they have a project that's too complex or time consuming for their internal team to build. If this is your situation, contact us! We can get your web project across the finish line.

Sample Projects

The range of custom projects we've worked on is vast — a little of this, a little of that. Here are some examples of the types of custom solutions we can deliver.

Web Applications

Web applications are highly customized and the requirements vary quite a bit from project to project. In general, we use the following modern technologies for our web applications and implement three-tier architecture principles.

We design our web applications as Progressive Web Apps (PWAs). These have many advantages, but clients especially appreciate how PWAs allow your application to behave more like a native app on phones, tablets, and computers.

The most successful web apps start with a prototype. When BlueChannel designs a prototype, we mockup your idea for an application in a website-like format and attempt to show all pages, popups, features, and functionality that will be included.

A prototype is treated as a standalone project, with its own estimate and timeline, and it has three main objectives.

01.
It allows us to catch problems early. The prototype design process allows the client and development team to identify areas of complexity and to make adjustments before programming has started.
02.
It provides a roadmap. It gets everyone one the same page ahead of the project start and prevents costly change orders.
03.
It gives us more accurate pricing. With everything represented in the prototype, there should be few surprises. This means you'll have a reliable cost figure to work with.

This is a good time to introduce and test design ideas as well. Keep in mind that a prototype is hardcoded and uses only light programming, which means it doesn't actually save user data when you navigate and certain functionality may be limited.

If done correctly, your prototype will demonstrate the general look and feel of your application and effectively communicate your ideas behind the project. This is a valuable tool to have at your disposal when talking to potential investors, partners, and engineers.

How long does it take?

Lighter projects might be completed within a couple of days, while larger web apps will take several months. Here's an example of the timeline we might expect for a typical web app beta launch.

Planning
1 week – 3 months
Prototyping
1 week – 3 months
Development
1 week – 6 months
Warranty
30 days after launch

6-12 months from start to launch is a realistic timeline for a full-blown web application. Ultimately, your project requirements and will drive the launch date.
